La Malinche, the multi-lingual Nahau woman, was an instrumental part of Hernan Cortes's conquest of the Aztecs. Initially given to Cortez along with twenty other slave women by local Maya, Malinche or Marina, as she was known to the Spanish, would quickly be discovered to be able to communicate with Aquilar, a priest who had learned Mayan, but couldn't communicate with the other tribes in Meso America. Malinche's role was so important to the conquest that Cortes was said to have noted, "After God, we owe this conquest of New Spain to Doña Marina.”
Today, La Malinche is a controversial figure. To some she is the Mother of Mexico, but to many in Mexico, she is viewed as the ultimate traitor, having sided with Cortes and convinced so many tribes to join him against the Aztecs. In her lifetime, the Spanish Conquistadors held her in high regard and spoke reverentially as Dona. Chroniclers noted explicitly that the conquest would not have been possible without her.
The Tlaxcalan tribes still hold her in high regard and she has in many ways entered into a place of legend and myth. She would die relatively young, ten years after the conquest. Marina would bear Hernan Cortes a son, Martin, who was a recognized heir. While Cortes never married Marina, she would end up marrying another Spanish noble, Juan Jaramillo, and the marriage would produce a daughter and enoble her as a Spanish noblewoman.
