Carolingian Frankish art depicts royal guards in a blend of armor types, but there is speculation if this is stylized depictions of Romans or if the Royal Guards. In particular Miniature of Charles the Bald welcoming monks from Tours in the Vivian Bible had a very vivid detailed colored image of the guards in the court of Charles the Bald. Archaeology is scarce on the subject, but we offer these as Royal Guards as depicted in Carolingian Art to go with our Charlemagne.
